Man missing on Remarkables hike found safe
· RNZQueenstown police have found a man who failed to returned from a hike to the Remarkables ski field.
The 25-year-old, identified only as Sanjeev, was dropped off at the start of Wye Creek track off State Highway 6 (Kingston Road) on Wednesday morning.
He was planning to walk to the Remarkables, where he was expected to arrive at about 8pm.
His friends reported him missing when he failed to do so.
Constable Pepper Ruston of Queenstown Police Search and Rescue said Sanjeev had been found safe, "and while slightly hypothermic and extremely hungry, in overall good spirits".
"We would like to extend a huge thank you to all volunteers who assisted in the search and ultimately brought the hiker to safety," he said.
"Volunteer teams included search and rescue dogs, Alpine Cliff Rescue, and Sub Alpine Search and Rescue teams, who gave up their time today to assist a very appreciative hiker."
The man was being treated by paramedics.
Ruston said the incident was a timely reminder for anyone planning to set out for a walk or tramp, to choose the right trip for your skills, understand the weather, pack warm clothes and extra food, share your plans with a friend, take a distress beacon, and to stick with your group and make decisions together.
