Jake Paul accused of breaking a major rule in Mike Tyson fight that made 'huge difference'
by Steve Wollaston, https://www.facebook.com/stevewollastonjournalist/, Daniel Orme · Birmingham LiveFormer WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew has levelled criticism at Jake Paul for using "full on punchers gloves" in his fight against Mike Tyson. The YouTube sensation turned boxer emerged victorious over the iconic pugilist during a bout in Texas, though his win did not deliver the knockout he had intimated.
Bellew took to Twitter after the match noting the apparent disparity in the gloves used by both fighters: "The gloves Mike has on are looking heavily padded while Jake has on grants which are full on punchers gloves. There is a huge difference in them gloves and I'm only watching from a bed."
Bellew was also outspoken about the very staging of the event, blaming public interest for its occurrence: "We are all to blame for this man! We are all talking and watching! ".
He expressed strong opinions about future encounters involving Jake Paul, urging a boycott until he squares off against a more fitting opponent: "We have to stop this fool [Paul]! Don't tune into him until he fights someone who is fit healthy and not a grandfather! Any proper boxing people helping Paul need to look at themselves! This is just sad."
Despite his stern words for Paul and the spectacle of the fight, Bellew acknowledged that Paul showed restraint in the ring, citing post-fight comments from Jake Paul who suggested he held back to avoid injuring Tyson, reports the Mirror.
Bellew has voiced his opinion on the recent fight, stating: "I don't like this stupid idiot kid but I will say this... he stopped beating on Mike there and showed him some respect and dignity by letting him survive. He didn't go for the KO there, he stepped off him and let him be."
Following the fight, both Tyson and Paul have been handed suspensions. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which oversaw the professional event, has mandated a period of rest for both fighters.
According to regulations, each fighter must rest for three days for every round fought, equating to a total of 24 days of rest for both Tyson and Paul. Despite this, both boxers have already announced their plans for future fights.
Paul is setting his sights on a showdown with Canelo Álvarez, while Tyson has challenged his brother Logan to a bout.
