Youth in Manchester targeted for skills training workshops

The HEART Trust, in collaboration with the Manchester Parish Office, recently launched a workshop which targeted youth from communities in Manchester who were seeking hands-on certification. The event – a Prior Learning Assessment Blitz, was hosted at the Holmwood Technical High School in Christiana.

Anastasia Beckford, community intervention Officer at HEART/NSTA Trust Manchester Parish Office, highlighted the value of the initiative for aspiring workers. “This programme is not only about gaining certifications; it’s a stepping stone to empower our youth with skills they can rely on to make a living,” said Beckford.

“We’re here to discuss further outcomes and opportunities this initiative continues to create. The enthusiasm from participants is palpable, and it’s encouraging to see the positive ripple effect of skills training in our communities,” she added.

The programme which is certified by City & Guilds, offered training modules in food and beverage services, motorcycle repair and servicing, welding, and painting. The event’s agenda, facilitated through communication with Manchester Parish Custos, Lieutenant Colonel Garfield Green, also included a special contribution of a motorcycle, enabling more hands-on training for the motorcycle repair and servicing segment.

Green underscored the importance of fostering “Values and Attitudes” among Manchester’s youth, describing the program as a motivator for both personal and professional growth.

“The aim is to provide these young men and women with more than just skills – we’re giving them a foundation in work ethics and a sense of pride in their work,” noted Custos Green. “This programme is something I intend to sustain, as practical training opens doors for our youth.”

Building on Sunday’s success, promotional efforts are already under way, with Green initiating a road safety drive targeting motorcyclists in the area. “This coming Sunday, across from the hospital gate, we’ll be mobilising young people from south Manchester to receive safety helmets. It’s a move to prioritise safety and encourage road awareness,” Green said.
