After a disappointing launch and then some brief moments of optimism, it seems like developer Starbreeze is stepping away from the multiplayer heist game PAYDAY 3. Despite some positive reception to recent year-one anniversary updates, it looks like the developer will be winding things down in the months ahead.

In the firm's recent financial report (thanks, IGN), Starbreeze CEO Mats Juhl caused a bit of a stir amongst hardened fans with some comments regarding the game's performance and future. Juhl started off strong and wrote: "During the quarter, both the third and fourth DLCs for Payday 3 – 'Chapter 3: Houston Breakout' and 'Chapter 4: Fear & Greed' were released. In conjunction with both launches, a lot of free content was also released to all players, including a new free heist. Both DLCs received a very positive reception from the player base, and the game's rating on Steam, among others, has taken significant steps upwards."

Changing course violently, Juhl says continued investment, at least on the same level, is no longer justified: "The level of investment during Payday 3's first year on the market, both through launched DLCs and "Operation Medic Bag", has been at an elevated level. Ahead of year two, we are confident in being able to continue delivering amounts of value to our players with a significantly lower level of investment." It's that last part that has stuck in the craw of some players over on the game's dedicated subreddit.

"fear and greed" sums up what has happened perfectly, took people's money and ran for the hills that's the modern day gaming experience and yet actual fans who gave valid criticism at launch were labelled haters on forums and told "the game isn't bad"

Game did nothing better than 2 unless people count graphics as a positive, rip to a poorly optimised, boring, soulless game made in 12 months or less.

It’s a great game. Honestly had so many improvements over the second. Tech issues aside, I don’t know why people hate it so much. It’s like they expected it to launch with PD2 levels of content.

@Deityjester Stealth is miles better than the first and it’s not nearly as janky. It’s much more modernized, smoother, and better QOL changes. I’ve played both and would rather play Payday 3 than 2 easily.

From the couple people I know with thousands of hours on PayDay2, as well as my own day one experience, this game is an extreme letdown. One of the more botched sequels in history.

Fine but before they leave us high and dry, female a bunch of heist from pd2 first. This is sad and bothers me. Had they made the game based on what we liked in pd2, game would have done much better.

This should be more proof that the GaaS model ship has sailed. Yes this game had issues at launch but from a gameplay perspective it made some solid improvements and QoL features. Dopamine is a funny thing. Even the next iteration in your favorite service title isn't a certainty. There's a reason Fortnite OG is coming back permanent and OVerW2 failed to catch the the OVerW1 crowd the same way. You put a 1000 hrs into something and even a new loading screen can deter. Service games can adapt/update(fornite, cod, apex etc.) But outside of CoD creating new annual game for GaaS titles or even sequels has a track record for being a disaster...regardless of the good reasons some of you will give me. People don't want to abandon the time/effort

Yep still stickin with Pay Day 2, only way I would play it is if it were free. PD3 was such a massive disappointment and showed that the devs learned jack from 2 what so ever.

This is why i dont buy multiplayer only ganes, once they decide to shut down the servers you won't be able to play it even if you bought it
