Malaysia will begin rolling out Euro 5 petrol in September next year as part of a long-term initiative to improve air quality on a national level, Malay Mail reported citing Utusan Malaysia.

This will be followed by full implementation of the fuel by 2027, and it will comply with Environmental Quality (Control of Petrol and Diesel Fuel Contents) Regulations 2007, said minister of natural resources and environmental sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

“The adoption of Euro 5 petrol is a sustainable solution that will positively impact Malaysia’s air quality. The NRES and the Department of Environment (DOE) will work closely with industry players to ensure a seamless transition,” NIk Nazmi was quoted as saying.

The shift to Euro 5 petrol is likely to drive advancements in the local automotive sector, in the commercial and heavy industries in particular, where updated vehicle technology is essential.

The introduction of Euro 5 petrol in Malaysia was gazetted in 2015 by the ministry of natural resources and environment for introduction at pumps by September 1, 2025, and the availability of Euro 5 diesel was also gazetted at the same time for September 2020.

Quality of Euro 5 petrol will adhere to new standards for sulphur and lead, according to the ministry at the time. It also added that the remaining minimum standards for Euro 5 petrol such as Reid Vapour pressure, oxygen content, benzene, olefins, aromatics and more will be enforced in stages, throughout years 2026 and 2027.

Euro 5 diesel replaced the Euro 2M grade in April 2021, with the fuel’s introduction postponed due to constraints faced by various industries as well as the Covid-19 pandemic.
